Blobfish The World’s Ugliest Fish
The Blobfish is a deep sea fish found in deep sea near Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand. The fish is known for its unusual appearance. There are many pictures of Blob Fish uploaded on the internet. And it is also been voted as the world’s ugliest fish in 2013.
The Blobfish is a deep sea fish which lives in lower parts of the sea. It can be found at the depth of 600-1200 m. The fish is around 30 cm long. The pressure at such high depth is 60 to 120 times more than the pressure at the sea level.
Many species of fishes have gas bladder but having a gas bladder at such depth would have been a disadvantage as gas bladder would make it difficult for the fish to maintain buoyancy.
Because of which Blobfish’s body is made primarily from a gelatinous matter. This matter have density lesser than water because of its unusual body makeup it can swim in deep sea water without spending any energy.
It lacks muscles like other fishes however not having muscle isn’t a disadvantage. As the Blob Fish doesn’t require any muscle to catch its food it just swallows any floating edible things like small crustaceans.
Its density is lesser than water due to which it appears quite different when it is taken out of the water. The Blobfish is not fished commercially it is often a by catch in deep sea trawler nets. Some scientists believe that the population of fish can decrease because of the deep sea trawling.
The unusual appearance of the fish caused it to rise to fame. As it was voted as the world’s ugliest fish. It is also the mascot of the Ugly Animal Preservation Society which is organization for preservation of weirdest and ugliest looking animals.
