There have been many great empires throughout the history. However, none of the empires were able to conquer land as much the largest empires mentioned in the list below.
10. Xiongnu Empire
Xiongnu Empire was a nomadic empire in China which inhabited from third century BC to first century AD. At its greatest extent in the year 176BC it was 9 million sq km in area and formed 6.04% area of the world.
9. Yuan Dynasty
Yuan Dynasty was an empire in China which was ruled by Kublai Khan a leader of Mongolian Borjigin clan. The empire had a land area of 11.0 to 13.72 million sq km and was about 7.39 to 9.21% of the world in the year 1310 or 1330.
8. Ummayad Caliphate
Ummayad Caliphate was the second caliphate from the year 661 to 750. The empire was ruled by Caliph. The Ummayad Caliphate has area of 11.5 million sq km in the year 720 and accounted 7.45% of the total area of the world.
7. Abbasid Caliphate
Abbasid Caliphate was the third caliphate from the year 750 to 1517. The Abbasid caliphs took over the Ummayid Caliphate in 750. At its greatest extent in 750 it has area of 11.5 million sq km in the year 750 and accounted 7.45% of the total area of the world equal to that of Ummayad Caliphate.
6. Second French Colonial Empire
Second French Colonial Empire was French colonial empire established in 1830. The French took over various parts of the world. At its greatest extent in 1920 it was 11.5 million sq km in area and constituted 7.72% area of the world.
5. Qing dynasty
Qing dynasty was a Chinese imperial dynasty. The empire was a multiethnic empire established in 1636. The Qing dynasty had a total area of 13.1 to 14.7 million sq km and constituted at 9.20 to 13.43% the total area of the earth in the year 1790.

The Spanish empire was an empire established in Spain during the 15th century. Spanish empire established and conquered various colonies throughout the world. At the time of its peak in 1810 or 1750 it was around 13.7 to 20.0 million sq km in area and around 9.20 to 13.43% the total area of the world.
3. Russian Empire
The Russian empire was established in 1721 by Peter the great. Russian Empire reached its greatest extent in 1895. The Russian empire was 22.8 million sq km in area and constituted 15.31% of the total area of the world.
2. Mongol Empire
Mongol Empire was established by Genghis Khan in 1206. The Mongol formed the biggest contiguous empire in history. The Empire was 24 million sq km in area in the year 1270 or 1309. It covered 16.11% of the total area on earth.
1. British Empire
British Empire is the largest empire to ever exist. The empire is also known as the empire on which the sun never sets as the British had colonies throughout the world. The British Empire was 35 million sq km in area and covered 23.44% of the total area of the world in the year 1920.
