Creepy Places – Roopkund Lake aka “The Skeleton Lake”
The Roopkund Lake or Roopkund Mystery (The Skeleton Lake) is a glacier lake located at an elevation of 5209 m in the state of Uttarakand, India.
The lake is isolated in isolated location of Himalaya. Roopkund Lake is surrounded by rocks and snow covered mountains. The place nearby is also a famous trekking desination.
The Lake is shallow with depth of two meters. Roopkund Lake has hundreds of human skeletons in it.
In 1942 ranger HK Madhwal discovered the skeleton in the Lake. However the British authority thought it was remains of secret Japanese soldiers. However scientist disclosed that the skeleton were too old to be of the Japanese soldiers.
Later it was found that the skeleton belonged to people from the 9th Century. The skeleton are scattered around and in the lake. Bones are visible at bottom of the Lake during summer when the nearby snow melts.
Later scientific research proved that the bones belonged to Konkanastha Brahmins from Maharashtra, India. The cause of death for hundreds of people was same by getting blow to back of the head from objects falling from sky which is due to hailstorm.
The route on which this skeleton are located is near the route for Nanda Devi Raj Jat fetival which takes place once in every 12 years.
The area now has conservation issues as many people come to this area as trekkers and tourist. But some people takes bones away with them. Efforts have been made to save this bones as eco tourism.
The Roopkund Lake is covered with snow most of the time. Roopkund is also one of the famous trekking spot in Chamboli district.
